Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Mixing bowls
  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula
  • Knife and cutting board (for chopping optional toppings like green onions)
  • Aluminum foil (optional, for covering during baking)

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion diced (optional)
  • 1 packet taco seasoning or homemade equivalent
  • 1 can 10 oz cream of chicken soup
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese divided
  • 1 bag 10 oz Doritos chips , crushed (about 2 cups)
  • Optional toppings: chopped green onions diced tomatoes, jalapeños, or additional cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven : Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Cook the Ground Beef : In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. If using onions, add them to the skillet and sauté until softened. Drain excess grease.
  • Season the Beef : Stir in the taco seasoning according to package instructions (typically adding water and simmering for a few minutes). Remove from heat.
  • Prepare the Filling : In a mixing bowl, combine the cooked ground beef mixture, cream of chicken soup, sour cream, and half of the shredded cheddar cheese. Mix well.
  • Assemble the Casserole :
  • Spread half of the crushed Doritos chips evenly on the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Pour the beef mixture over the chips and spread it out evenly.
  • Sprinkle the remaining crushed Doritos chips on top of the beef mixture.
  • Top with the remaining shredded cheddar cheese.
  • Bake : Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. For a golden finish, broil for 1–2 minutes at the end (watch closely to avoid burning).
  • Add Toppings (Optional) : Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Garnish with optional toppings like chopped green onions, diced tomatoes, or jalapeños before serving.
  • Serve : Cut into squares and enjoy!

Notes

Storage : Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven before serving.
Customization : Feel free to swap out ingredients based on preference—try using ground turkey instead of beef or adding black beans for extra protein.
Crushing Doritos : To crush Doritos, place them in a resealable plastic bag and gently crush with a rolling pin or the back of a spoon.
Spice Level : Adjust the spice level by choosing mild, medium, or hot taco seasoning, depending on your taste preference.
